On Wednesday 27 November, we celebrated the Hour of Code with activities and displays setup in our Year 7 & 8 wing. During recess and lunchtime, students had the opportunity to complete online programming tutorials, learn how to program Scratch to use with LEGO WeDo, play with Bee-Bots and MaKey MaKey and be inspired by those featured in the Hour of Code promotional videos.
Highlights of the day were:
> Seeing students looked on in amazement at how they could program a MaKey MaKey to connect physical objects to a computer. (In this case, a bag of potatoes was a real hit!)
> Students creating "Synchronized Bee-Bot Dancing" with 6 Bee-Bots.
> Students taking the opportunity to participate in the fabulous Hour of Code online tutorials.
> Charlie (Year 7), who commenced the Khan Academy JavaScript tutorials and proudly came to me at the end of the day to tell me that she had completed all of the tutorials!
> Rhys (Year 8), completed the first 20 step tutorial and said, "If I'd known that programming was this easy, I would have started years ago!"
> It was fabulous to see boys and girls equally as excited and enthusiastic about programming.
Special thanks to:
> The Hour of Code organisers for providing fabulous support materials and online tutorials.
> The creator of "Whack A Potato" for sharing their funny and clever game.
> Our fabulous students for their participation and enthusiasm for all-things programming!
